My first week with Remix has been exciting. Being involved in a real life communications based working environment has helped me to better understand the importance of what I've learnt so far completing my BCOMM.
I have connected with a number of different people taking on different roles within the office. I have done research into products and restaurants which has helped me to write draft reviews for the Remix Magazine. Depending on what I was researching, I really enjoyed having this responsibility. I was able to select the information I found most effective and transform that information into a powerful review. I have also dabbled in the Remix Magazine Instagram page this week, mainly through assisting the editor in posting images from old photo shoots and accurately tagging the stylists, makeup artists, brands, etc. I also assisted in writing the appropriate captions for these posts. I enjoyed having this responsibility as well, because it allowed for me to learn about the brands that Remix works with, and as a result I now feel that I have a clearer idea on Remix Magazine's 'image'. I have made returns for the company, which has introduced me to a number of Remix stakeholders. This has allowed me to actually use my communication skills in a business based environment, which is what I have been learning a lot about throughout my course. Finally, this week I have handled phone calls for the company, and I have managed Trade me accounts for selling old equipment in the office.
The most significant challenge this week has been working beneath someone. My confidence in my work has been challenged through taking on the role of an assistant to someone with more experience than myself. I feel the need to impress the editor with my written work, however I have not had much feedback yet other than that my work has been 'helpful' which is somewhat demotivating and less than reassuring. I must also confront someone within the company about reimbursing me with petrol money if I am to continue making regular deliveries. I feel it is best that I wait a few weeks before bringing this up, as I want to show my worth first and it is also possible that someone else may bring it up within the office before I have to.
Overall, the first week has been productive in a number of ways, and I now have a feel for the sort of work that will be expected of me during this placement. I hope to work on more written work and social media projects in the future, because those were the aspects that I enjoyed most this week. I also hope to build stronger relationships with the Remix staff in order to feel more like a part of the team as appose to just the ‘intern’. I plan on working on these relationships a great deal next week.
I can now add the following skills to my CV: - Experience handling social media in representing a company - Experience in admin work
