Week #7

This week I was assigned three written tasks. The first involved the fashion that was worn at Coachella 2015. Steven asked me to find out what the celebrities were wearing this year, then to select the top 5 outfits depending on my own particular taste. I felt like this was a great opportunity to show Remix that I shared a similar taste of fashion with their company, but I also felt the pressure of selecting outfits which they may or may not share the same passion for. For this reason, I selected 7 different outfits to write about in order to offer Steven something he could work with. This way, he could choose his top 5 out of my top 7. I felt like putting in this extra work would show initiative and my capability for thinking outside of the box rather than simply sticking to the bare minimum when it came to completing a task.
I started by googling images of different celebrities at Coachella. I had to be careful that I collected images from the correct year. I then selected 7 outfits which I thought looked the best, making sure to collect a variety of styles so that I had more to write about, and so that readers would remain interested throughout the article. I then had to find out what designer brands each celebrity was wearing. I did not want to overload the descriptions of the outfits with brand names however, because I also had to include WHY we loved the outfits, not just where the outfits came from. For this reason, I aimed for around 3 brand names per outfit. I also wanted to make sure I mentioned the brand names which had the greatest recognition. This part required a fair bit of research, as most websites that covered the fashion at Coachella mainly described the style of the clothing rather than where it was actually from. I also found that some websites would claim one thing while other websites would claim something completely different. I had to be very careful to get my facts straight, so this process took some time.
Once I had collected all of my information, it was all about working out how to structure it. I used the playful tone of Remix to describe each outfit and kept the overall descriptions short and sweet. I tried to also express knowledge of the celebrities and what they are known for while writing about their outfit choice. I wanted to sound like someone who was very knowledgeable about celebrities and the world of fashion, even though I’m only just beginning to learn. This meant that I had to do a brief amount of research on the celebrities themselves in order to make my written work more effective.
I then sent the completed document through to Steven who instantly gave me really good feedback. He told me that I had done a great job and that the article would be going online this coming weekend.
The second written task involved a new Levi’s clothing range. The range was designed for Auckland cyclists who require clothing designs that are both suitable for traveling by bike, as well as their everyday street wear. I wrote about the suitability of the designs and the promotions that were surrounding the launch. This was a short piece, which came to approx. 200 words.
The final written piece I received from Steven was about a new beauty product from ARTDECO. I took the same approach to this work as I did with the one involving the new Levi’s range; I described the features of the product, then the promotions surrounding the product’s launch. Once again, this piece was approx. 200 words.
Overall, I enjoyed completing the Coachella piece the most, as I was able to express my own thoughts and opinions. It required more research as well, because I was not provided with any background information from press releases etc. unlike with the Levi’s and ARTDECO work. I felt like I had a greater chance to actually show off my skills with the Coachella piece, and I was also given a deadline which made it more of a challenge.
