This week I have been completing similar jobs to what I completed in the first week. However it feels as though I have been doing more deliveries than actual work that allows me to use my communication skills. It can be frustrating, but I guess it's similar to real life where I will have to do things I enjoy as well as things that I don't when it comes to my career. In saying that, I was assigned two written projects this week.
First, Isabelle asked me to do research on some new beauty products that they wanted to dedicate a section to in their magazine. She got me to write short reviews about the products and email my finished work to her. I found this somewhat challenging, mainly because I'm not actually familiar with beauty products, so some of the discourse used online to describe it did not make sense to me. However I was able to get a basic understanding of what the product did, what sets it aside from others like it, and the overall feedback on its effects. This ended up being enough to work with.
Another challenge I have noticed through writing for Remix, has been trying to develop the same written language as them. Their language lies somewhere between formal and informal, and it sounds like a female has written it (from my perspective). Although I tend to write similar, there appears to be certain words they do or don't use, and certain ways for opening and closing a piece of writing. As time passes and I complete more written work for Remix, I believe I will be able to pick up even more on their preferred language.
My second written project was the most interesting one I have done for remix so far. Steven (my host supervisor) asked me to think of 5 unique activities that people could do with their mum this Mother's Day, and asked me to write a short article on it. First, I looked on the online website for Remix magazine to see how they had managed 'top 5' entries in the past. Doing this gave me an idea of their desired structure, length, and overall tone/style for writing these entries. I then did some research online to see what other websites were suggesting people do for Mother's Day - I wanted my entry to be unique. I found that scrolling through suggestions gave me inspiration for my own suggestions. I wrote out my entry, making sure to regularly compare my language to that of remixes, and sent it through to Steven. He said he would not have time to look at it today, but I look forward to his feedback so that I can learn what I can do next time to make it better. I enjoyed this task because I was able to engage with my imagination and creativity in forming activities, rather than simply describe a product based on information that was already readily available online. This week felt less productive than the last, however I really enjoyed completing the written project about mother’s day.
I can now add the following skills to my CV: - Experience in writing articles for a magazine
